Jump-hour watches were a kind of precursor to the digital watch – displaying the time with numerals in a window rather than hands moving around a dial. It is a style that has fallen out of fashion, but two brothers from Warwickshire have designed a new watch that looks very different to anything we have seen recently: the MAALS Jump Over The Moon.

Introducing the MAALS Jump Over the Moon watch

The two brothers behind MAALS have been collecting watches for over 20 years, and encouraged by the crowdfunding success of recent design-led watches, decided to create one of their own. MAALS is an abbreviation of their names: Mark Anthony Andrew Lee Sealey. Their first model is the MAALS Jump Over The Moon Moonphase watch.

The watch is named after the stacked arrangement of its movement and will be available in brushed stainless steel and black steel. The unique selling point for this watch is the rounded triangular opening at the six o’clock position, through which the time is displayed via two rotating discs and a moon phase complication that completes a lunar cycle every 291⁄2 days. Unusually for a jump-hour style watch, there is a centrally located sweeping second hand.
MAALS Jump Over The Moon Specifications

The MAALS Jump Over The Moon watch is housed in a 42mm case that is finished in either brushed stainless steel or PVD black steel, with water resistance to 5ATM, anti-reflective coating on the inside of the domed crystal and powered by a Miyota 6P24 movement. The case back will feature a laser-etched design by Leamington Spa-based artist OKSE (Chris Oxenbury) of an outer space scene, with an astronaut reaching out and jumping over the moon. Buyers will be given a choice of either a black or brown vintage-style leather strap and each watch is to be presented in a bespoke hand-stitched tan leather watch pouch. Multiple MAALS pouches can be zipped together as your collection grows, which is a nice touch.

Buy a MAALS Jump Over the Moon Watch

The MAALS Jump Over The Moon, will retail at £275 including the handmade leather watch
pouch or £249.99 without it. The pouch will be sold separately for £45. MAALS are offering pre-orders of the combination pack of watch and pouch at a 40% discount via their website.
The first 150 pre-orders will be entered into a draw to win one of two watches – the opposite version to the one they have pre-ordered. A crowdfunding campaign is planned, in which there will be a 35% 48-hour early bird discount and a 30% discount thereafter.
