Galvin Alku

A female watchmaker has designed and launched a new mechanical watch infused with Nordic minimalism: introducing the Galvin Alku.

Introducing the Galvin Alku

The Galvin Alku comes from the first female-founded microbrand watch company in Australia. It hit its funding  goal on the Kickstarter platform in just over five minutes! The brand’s founder, Susan Galvin, has designed a vintage-style automatic watch with a Nordic twist, at an affordable price.

Galvin Alku: First Impressions

What about the watches, then? The Alku collection has a classic style, with the design inspired by the 1940s and 50s. This includes a domed dial with either a white or black background, combined with electric blue or silver hands. Four strap options are available: smooth leather or suede with two methods for fastening.

Inside is a premium Miyota 9039  -a popular choice with higher-end microbrands for its combination of accuracy, affordability and reliability. The price, now the early bird deals have gone, is a very reasonable $499 AUD (£275) which we think represents great value. We can’t think of any reason not to jump on this campaign as the specs, designs and price are all spot on. If you are in the market for a classic-looking, quality timepiece, the Galvin Alku is definitely one to watch.

About the Brand: Galvin Watches

There is also a British connection to the Galvin watch range: we asked Susan to tell us more: “After graduating from the Finnish School of Watchmaking, I moved to Manchester, UK, where I worked for Tag Heuer. In 2013, I was offered a transfer to Sydney, where I have been ever since. I worked for Omega watches from 2016, however I was made redundant whilst on maternity leave in March 2020. This led me to start my own brand.”

With women under-represented in the world of wristwatches and disproportionately impacted by job losses from coronavirus, we wish Susan’s venture the very best and hope the success of the Kickstarter continues for many years to come.
