Ikepod

We briefly covered Ikepod in our Kickstarter round up a couple of days ago, and the brand owners have now been in touch with more details of this new Kickstarter watch.

Introducing Ikepod

The new Ikepod range is a reissue of a timepiece from the 1990s. The new models, while using quartz movements to reduce the price point, replicate the famous case design of the original. Unlike the Swiss-made originals, these new watches are made in Hong Kong. Two models are available on the Kickstarter: the Duopod and the Chronopod. The two-handed Duopod version has a Miyota quartz movement inside a 42mm case and is priced at an RRP of £420. The Chronopod adds a stopwatch function and is housed in a slightly larger 42mm case. The price tag is also a bit bigger at £520. Both are being offered at a discount to Kickstarter backers. Watches with automatic movements are currently in development and will be launched towards the end of 2019.

What became of the original Ikepod?

The original Iepod was created in 1994 by Marc Newson. He left the company in 2012 and is no longer involved in the company or the design of the new Ikepod models. The company was purchased by its new owners – who now control the brand and its registered trademarks. The original Ikepod watches produced between 1994 and 2006 could well become sought-after collectors’ timepieces and those produced between 2008 and 2012 are even rarer – just look at the prices they fetch on eBay!

Two new Ikepod models will be produced: the chronograph Chronopod and the two-handed Duopod. Of the two, we prefer the two-hander as it looks cleaner and the dial does distracts less from the cool case shape. Because both watches are quartz-powered, we think the starting Kickstarter price (never mind the £400+ RRP) is a touch higher than we are used to. On the other hand, you are getting something very different to the usual Kickstarter watches with a unique – trademarked – case shape. You can get further details at Ikepod.com and you can read more and back the new Ikepod watch on Kickstarter.
