Breitling

Breitling, one of the world’s leading watch innovators, started life in a small workshop in 1884.  Leon Breitling started his business by developing chronographs for commercial use, only to go on and expand his workforce as time went by.  By the early 20th century, it was a name you could trust for stopwatches and car tachymeters.

Breitling – About the Brand

At the start of the 20th century, there was also growth in the aviation industry.  Breitling helped to fill this niche with reliable chronometers and devices to help recreational and working pilots alike.

Moving On

When Leon passed away, his son Gaston took over the family business.  It was Gaston who started to innovate with wristwatches, including those with multiple functions.  His son, Willy, would take the business even further, devising new functions, features, buttons and more.  Watches were getting more advanced, and the company was at the forefront of the industry.

Breitling continued to produce luxury watches as the years went by.  While they were still focusing on technological innovation, they made new efforts to produce stunning watches with intricate designs.  A Breitling watch was one you could depend on.  Now, it was one which looked spectacular, too!  Some watches even arrived in solid gold.

Breitling chose to refine their technology both for consumers and for commercial use.  Their technology is still used in aviation to this day.  Aeroplanes and jets all over the world were continuing to be built with Breitling technology in the cockpits.  It was appealing and accurate at the same time.

All Change

Following Willy Breitling’s passing, the company changed hands.  New owners took over in the 1980s, and there was a new approach to developing the company’s luxury lines.  Breitling’s most popular watches included the Navitimer, which was given new upgrades and a whole new lease of life.  New watches such as the Emergency, and the Aerospace, helped to redefine precision watches.

The company has gone from strength to strength since the 1980s.  In 2015, Breitling produced a watch which would sync up with smart devices.  This means that you could now share alerts and messages between your phone and your wristwatch.  For a company which is so passionate about its roots, Breitling has never seemed afraid of the future.

Looking to the Future

There were more changes at the top of the company made in 2017.  By this time, the company was taken under the wing of CVC Capital Partners, who brought in a new CEO.  It had been a long time since a member of the founding family had run the company, but their ethos and passion for watchmaking carried through.  However, some fans may be wondering what’s next for the brand.

Breitling is a watch company that cares deeply about its past.  You only have to look at their marketing and website to see this!  Their watches are unique in that they bring luxury and technology together with incredible precision. With their latest watches already communicating with our smart devices, who’s to say what their research team will develop next?  They remain an exciting brand to watch.
