Albany Watch Company AMA

The Albany watch company got in touch with us last week, and they sent some renders of a very attractive bronze dive watch. We love bronze watches at WRUK and so we asked for more. They sent details of their first model, the AMA, and although it is still at the prototyping stage we think it shows some real promise.

The idea behind the Albany watch company is that each of their watches is inspired by a story, tradition, or hero of the sea. These tales are known as “Stories from the Sea,” and they are delivered to subscribers’ inboxes every few weeks along with updates on the watches.

About the Albany Watch Company

The Albany watch company was created by Brett, a South African from Cape Town, who is an actor and an artist with an obsession for design, dive watches and karaoke! The name Albany come from his father’s birthplace in Western Australia. Brett’s father purchased his first wristwatch in Albany in 1969, an Omega Seamaster in gold, and passed it on to Brett on his 18th birthday in 1993, starting a lifetime obsession with all things horological.

AMA Dive Watch from Albany

The AMA dive watch is inspired by a Japanese pearl diving tradition with the same name. It will use the excellent Swiss automatic STP 1-11 movement (an updated clone of the ETA 2824 which is still one of the best movements on the market). Depth resistance will be 300m, which is sufficient for serious use without having to be so thick it is uncomfortable to wear!

The AMA has been placed in the Goldilocks zone of comfort and wearability with a 48mm lug to lug length and 13.65mm height. The width of the case is 41.5mm. The screw-down crown, sapphire crystal bezel insert and dial will all be coated with BWG9 lume for a pale blue glow in the dark.
